To provide an additional opportunity for States to engage with their peers, FMCSA introduced the ITD State Spotlight in 2023. Every quarter, during an ITD Program Managers' meeting, a participating State presents their strategies to achieve their ITD goals, enabling other States to benefit from their experience and insights.

ITD State Spotlight: Georgia

October 2024

Georgia is expanding their data analysis capabilities and preparing for FMCSA’s IT Modernization, which will replace current data exchange methods with application programming interfaces (APIs). As ITD States are exploring how to adapt to APIs and manage API data once they have it, Georgia shares how they modified an existing system to consume inspection data from an FMCSA API and display it on a dashboard for comprehensive analysis.

ITD State Spotlight: Nebraska

August 2024

Nebraska is taking trucks with unsafe tires off the road while maximizing enforcement staff and maintaining the flow of commerce. The State leveraged ITD funds to deploy an enhanced e-screening system that features a tire anomaly detection system (TADS). The TADS has proven to be extremely accurate, and tire-related out-of-service rates have increased significantly since deployment.

ITD State Spotlight: Indiana

June 2024

Indiana is leveraging ITD funds to make it easier for CMV drivers to find places to park their trucks, with the goal of helping to reduce driver fatigue and improve highway safety. The State’s Truck Parking Information Management System (TPIMS) monitors availability in State-owned truck parking lots and tells drivers in real time where to find open spaces. Indiana’s Department of Transportation (INDOT) says the system is part of infrastructure upgrades at all of the State’s rest areas and welcome centers that will add more than 1,200 new parking spaces for truck.

ITD State Spotlight: South Dakota

February 2024

South Dakota said a successful ITD project begins with planning for its entire life cycle, including initial funding, implementation, and maintenance. Successful investments by the State include detection systems to spot missing, mismatched, or underinflated tires and thermal sensors that detect brake problems.

ITD State Spotlight: Kentucky

November 2023

The Kentucky ITD Team walked other States through their collaborative approach to identify safety issues, apply for ITD funding, and implement new technology during the inaugural ITD State Spotlight. Successful projects Kentucky has implemented with ITD grant funding include detection systems to ensure tire pressure meets safety standards and cameras that spot drivers using phones or failing to use seat belts behind the wheel.
